Thanks to Board of Trustees member, Amy Berry, our middle school science teacher, Mr. Tayler, was able to take our 7th grade students to the United States Climate Alliance Summit Meeting at Sierra Nevada College and met personally with Nevada Governor, Steve Sisolak, who gave the opening remarks.

The United States Climate Alliance is a bipartisan coalition of 25 governors committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The governors believe that smart, coordinated state action can ensure that the United States continues to contribute to the global effort to address climate change. This week’s meeting was of those governors’ staff members. They came together to collaborate on:

• Implementing policies that advance the goals of the Paris Agreement, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025
• Tracking and reporting progress to the global community
• Accelerating new and existing policies to reduce carbon pollution and promote clean energy deployment at the state and federal level

During the first hour of the conference, while LTS seventh graders looked on, Governor Steve Sisolak gave the opening address. The effect of climate change on Lake Tahoe was highlighted by Darcie Goodman Collins, PhD, CEO of the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

Governor Sisolak then spoke with our students (the only students at the event) individually and as a group and apologized for his generation’s failure to address climate change sooner, “The future is up to you. I’m afraid our generation has failed you”.
