Our Curriculum

Lake Tahoe School offers a creative, contemporary, challenging program for children in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8. Informed by state and national standards in each curricular area, we aim to exceed these. Our curriculum is balanced between core subjects (encompassing basic skills and traditional academic disciplines) and enrichment opportunities. Because we appreciate process—the importance of how students learn—our teachers exemplify an approach that is integrative, collaborative, cooperative, and especially "hands on." Because we are concerned with the uses to which these citizens-of-the-future will put their evolving knowledge and skills, we extol the values of honesty, hard work, dedication, and service.

School times and features are delineated below. We invite you to direct specific questions about our programs and curricula to the Headmaster or Dean, at 775/831-5828.

Pre-Kindergarten

Ages 3-4.
Small student/teacher ratio.
A curriculum-driven program.
Enrichment opportunities daily.
Morning Class: 8:15-11:45 a.m.
Afternoon Class: 12:45-3:15 p.m.

Our Pre-K program is offered for children 3 to 5 years old. This half-day program is designed to excite children with the wonders of learning about their world. It allows children to move easily, socialize fully, and learn through play and exploration. It provides a hands-on integrated curriculum developmentally appropriate for young children. In Pre-K, all the content areas are woven into exciting fun-filled weekly themes. Incorporated into the Pre-K experience are pre-reading, math, social studies, science, art, music, physical development, computer, and Spanish.

Elementary School (K-5)

Small student/teacher ratio.
Enrichment programs in art, music, computer, Spanish, and P.E.
School hours: 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Specialties: Declamation, Science Fair (4-5), outdoor education.

The Elementary School provides a full day, every day, of integrated learning. While the core subjects (English, social studies, math and science) provide the academic base, enrichment areas are robustly represented. A variety of after-school co-curricular activities augment our curricular offerings. The pedagogical principles that direct our elementary program are those of exploration and discovery, study that crosses the traditional disciplines, cooperative learning, and attentiveness to the types of teaching and learning best suited to each particular student. And the spirit that guides this enterprise?—nourishing opportunities, in a safe and loving environment, for the evolution of self and community. Our Elementary School prepares children well for the demands and the rewards of both adolescence and Middle School.

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Small student/teacher ratio.
Enrichment programs in art, music, computer, Spanish, and P.E.
Special focus on oral communications and declamation.
Specialties: outdoor education, declamation, Science Fair, photography and publishing.
School hours: 7:40 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

Purposeful instruction, intensive skill development, and cross-curricular collaboration drive our Middle School program. Students are individually supported in their personal growth by instructors who come to know them well over the course of a three-year relationship, and who possess extensive teaching experience and knowledge of their academic disciplines. Teachers maintain a commitment to providing meaningful, multidimensional content that requires students to consider ideas deeply and express their understanding effectively in a variety of ways. A strong emphasis on technological literacy provides the basis for many creative and innovative multi-media presentations. Attention to listening, interpersonal relations, organization, and accountability cultivate a balance between the development of independence and interdependence in these important foundational years. Our Middle School curriculum is further enhanced by a significant outdoor education component that strives to direct student learning and action beyond our school walls and out into the greater community while simultaneously complementing academic studies. With these components in mind, our ultimate goal is to prepare and empower students for their immediate and long-term success in social, personal, and academic settings.

Curricula

Lake Tahoe School's academic program has been designed as a holistic, integrated, carefully articulated curriculum. Objectives from grade to grade have been mapped out both sequentially (from each grade or skill level to the next), and across subject boundaries.
