About Us
|
Lake Tahoe School is a fully accredited, independent, coeducational day school serving students
in grades Pre-K through 8.
|
Our mission. LTS seeks to instill in our students the love of learning and the will to
use knowledge productively, courageously, compassionately. We strive to educate
knowledgeable students who value learning, possess strong study skills and work habits,
embrace intellectual and aesthetic enrichment, respect themselves and others, and aspire
to become still more knowledgeable and responsible members of the world community. We
aim to explore the unique educational opportunities of the rich, variegated Tahoe
environment in our quest to cultivate a sense of responsibility for, and celebration of, the
diversity of life and nature all around us.
|
Our motto: Where disciplined minds, sound character, healthy bodies, and creative
spirits thrive.
|
Our curriculum, informed by State standards and those of national
pedagogical organizations, goes far beyond these. We engage our students
in a challenging and increasingly interdisciplinary academic program
enriched by offerings in studio arts, outdoor education, music, drama,
photography, desktop publishing, declamation and state-of-the-art
technology. Our students learn through discovery methods that emphasize
their ability to select information, analyze evidence, synthesize
ideas, and formulate conclusions. Volunteerism and public service
education is a fundamental curricular focus. |
Our faculty, enthusiastic educators with superb academic preparation, engage
their students daily with challenging projects in both core and enrichment subjects. At
LTS students at all grade levels study a foreign language, practice
oral communication, participate in both performing and studio arts, make educational
use of Tahoe's very special resources, and increase their computer
competence using the latest in technology.
|
As for co-curricular activities, students may opt for chess,
cooking, drama, "fix-it" shop, literary magazine, chorus, or special
art projects, to list just a few of the indoor examples. And
the outdoor possibilities? We offer environmental awareness,
outdoor education, hiking, sports, camping tripsindeed, the
resources our Tahoe region provides for those with an aesthetic, environmental,
outdoors, or scientific bent are extraordinary. |
Location. Lake Tahoe School is situated in a newly constructed three-story facility at
995 Tahoe Blvd. (Highway 28), Incline Village, Nevada, with some 22 rooms for classes,
seminars, and special activities. Our facility was designed to provide more students still
greater opportunities in technology, computer (we have three labs devoted to these
fields), science, foreign languages, the fine and performing arts, and declamation.

Accreditation and Licensure. Lake Tahoe School is licensed
by the Department of Education of the State of Nevada to offer full
elementary and middle school curricula. It is, moreover, the only
elementary or middle school in Washoe County or the Nevada-Tahoe region,
public or private, fully accredited by the Northwest Association of
Accredited Schools (NAAS). The Pre-K program is accredited by the
National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
The school is a member, as well, of the Pacific Northwest Association
of Independent Schools (PNAIS). |
Enrollment and Class Size. The last few years, LTS enrollment
has grown to approximately 135, spanning the grades Pre-Kindergarten
through Eighth. Average class size has run between 8 and 15. For the
2006-2007 academic year, the student-to-teacher ratio is 6.6:1. |
Calendar and Daily Schedule. Lake Tahoe School has a calendar
of three trimesters, averaging 60 days. The 2006-2007 school year
begins August 21 and ends June 13. Besides the normal Winter Holiday,
there are one-week breaks in October, February, and April. Elementary
School runs 8:00 to 2:30; Middle School, 7:40 to 2:45. A variety of
activities are offered directly after school hours. |
Test Scores. Lake Tahoe School students consistently top all
grade-level equivalency charts for the Terra Nova Test, a standardized
test that covers reading, language, math, science and social studies.
It is given yearly to provide a nationally formed assessment at selected
grade levels. In 2003-2004, the majority of LTS students performed
at least two grade levels above national norms in all subject areas
for their respective grades. Half the scores were three grade levels
above these norms, and one-fourth of the scores were higher by four
or more grade levels. The battery of the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic
Skills) taken by students last year revealed the same high achievement
levels by our students. |
Admission and Scholarship Information. Parents of prospective students must submit an
application for admission and be accepted by the Admissions Committee. Admissions are done on
a rolling basis, with the first group of applicants being assessed in March. Scholarship
assistance based on financial need is available at all grade levels.
|
Notice of Nondiscriminatory Policy. Lake Tahoe School admits students of any race, color,
and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally
accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis
of race, color, or national or ethnic origin in administration of its admissions policies,
scholarship and loan programs, educational policies, and athletic and other
school-administered programs.
